=== Octave Markings ===
"8va" with a line above notes indicates to play them one octave higher. "15ma" indicates two octaves higher.
== Sight Reading ==
Sight Reading is the ability to play a piece from the notation without any additional information or practice. It is literally someone handing you a piece of music and expecting you to play it as anyone else would. It requires a great deal of functional knowledge about your instrument (keys, range, ability to play certain markings).
The first thing you must do is identify the key and time signature. Then scan the notation to identify the highest and lowest notes, as well as marked techniques that you have to be ready for. This may help determine a suitable position, as well as identify which scale patterns you will use. Many instruments (such as guitar) can interpret legato numerous ways. Some instruments are incapable of sounding certain markings (portamento on piano), but can instead use a similar technique (playing the chromatic scale). You must also take note of the major repetition markings, keying in on the location of Segno's and Coda's.
