A unique way to embellish a certain chord is to strum it slowly, arpeggiating it. The strum is still much faster than using individual pick strokes for each note - you play the strum just slow enough so that you can hear each note separate from the others but keep your hand's momentum steady like a normal strum.

Alternate-picked arpeggios typically have less rhythmic variety on the individual notes. However, they have an ascending or descending nature that can form its own form of rhythm.
