===Magnet===
The magnet used in a pickup is a strong part of its overall tone. It affects the frequency response, the output level, and maybe even formants beyond these things. However, I've never found strict rules that applied universally to all pickups that use ___ magnet. The coils winding material, pitch, uniformity of winds, and number of winds also play into this. However, there are some general rules:
* Ceramic: generally highest output, very responsive, tight low end and quite bright - good for bridge pickups
* Alnico V: scooped midrange and tight low end, lots of bite - good neck pickups for clear leads
* Alnico II: soft and warm - less top end bite - good if above choices are too harsh
That said, I wouldn't write-off a pickup just because it has ___ type of magnet - listen to clips or even better, find a guitar that has one that you can play.
