It may seem a bit counterintuitive to have two ways to control volume, but remember that certain processing occurs before the signal is affected by the fader, such as amplification by a microphone pre-amp and adjustments on the channel strip itself. Too hot of a signal can result in unwanted distortion. Furthermore, an extremely hot signal would require sliding the volume fader very low to normalize the instrument with others. This greatly reduces the volume fader's adjustment range, making it more difficult to fine-tune that channel's volume.

Microphone inputs often feature a button to enable <u>phantom power</u>. This provides a +48V DC current through the balanced cable to the microphone, essentially powering the microphone. While most dynamic and ribbon microphones do not require this, condenser microphones typically do. It can also be used to power active electronics on other types of devices. Since balanced connections operate on the voltage difference between a neutral and a signal line, constant DC power in both lines should not have any effect on the signal itself.
