Recording a Dry Signal or DI
When recording the dry signal, you may want to record the wet signal also. It may turn out that there is no need to re-amp, as the tone was perfect the way it was originally set up. In any case, it also makes a good baseline for comparison against re-amped tones.

# The Guitar is connected to a DI box (or modeler/amp that has a DI output).
# The DI output is connected to the appropriate input on the audio interface. For instance, it may be SPDIF for a modeler, or a mic/XLR input from a DI box.
# DAW track 1 will record the DI signal. Its input is set to the input listed in the above step (in some cases this may be just the left or right side of a stereo input). It is muted and software monitoring is turned off. It is record armed.
# If using a DI box and real amp, the other side of the DI box is connected to the appropriate pedals and amp.
# The cab is mic'ed or an output is configured on a modeler to send the wet signal and sent to another input on the audio interface. Some modelers may use the same input for both the DI and wet signal, splitting them as left and right.
# DAW track 2 will record the live, wet signal. Its input is set to the one used in the step above. It is record armed.
# The most ideal monitoring will be direct monitoring the wet input from the audio interface. Set up direct monitoring in your interface control panel, and disable software monitoring on DAW track 2. If you cannot use direct monitoring, the next best solution is to hear the amp/modeler's direct output. If that is not an option, then resort to software monitoring on DAW track 2, but be aware that there may be latency and you must ignore it while tracking. Avoid using multiple monitoring methods, as they are prone to phase issues that can be distracting.
# Press record in the DAW and start playing. Once finished, verify the track sounds good by listening to DAW track 2 played back. If it was not a good performance, delete the audio events for both tracks 1 and 2 and record another take. Do this until you are satisfied, then move on to the next track.
