As noted on the [[Guitar_Parts_and_Functions#Strings|Guitar Parts page]], the '''1st String''' in standard tuning is an E, and it is the thinnest string, with the highest pitch. Because the lowest-pitch, thickest string is also tuned to E, we often call the first string the '''high E string'''. Holding the guitar in normal position, it is furthest from your face, and easiest for the left-hand fingers to reach.
