As noted on the [[Guitar_Parts_and_Functions#Strings|Guitar Parts page]], the <u>1st String</u> in standard tuning is an E, and it is the thinnest string, with the highest pitch. Holding the guitar in normal position, it is furthest from the your face, and easiest for the left-hand fingers to reach.
