Automation
Of course, automation can do far more than control volume. It can do panning sweeps, swift audio drop-outs (stutter-type effect), and complex fades. And this is just when controlling the track's basic parameters. It can also control parameters of plugins or virtual instruments. For instance, it can control the amount of reverb, create complex pitch shifting patterns, create complex cutoff filter movements, etc.
Automation events can be manually edited or recorded like MIDI. Single automation events can control multiple parameters, or multiple envelopes can control the same parameter. The sky is the limit. Just be sure to stop tinkering at some point and finalize that track before you die!
