 Depending on your particular circumstances, the type of grill may affect its durability.  For most people a cloth grill will easily protect the speakers; but in more extreme situations a metal grill may be preferable.  Of course, this is more than likely a customization you can make to a cab if necessary, not a deal-breaker.  It may drive up the cost, though, so it's worth considering before purchase.

 Cabs generally use cloth or metal grills to protect the speakers.  The metal grills have a few different varieties.  The cloth are basically all the same but there is some minor variation.  The cabs themselves are usually coated with a material to protect the wood, which can be a plastic material, leather (fake), or a carpet-like coating (just very dense and short).  Sometimes the wood is simply stained and sealed.  They are generally black, but there are other colors if that's what you really want.
